A Shambhala Archives' Photography Exhibit.
The Shambhala Archives is pleased to present a selection of some of the
25,000 photographs in our holdings. The current exhibit presents images
of His Holiness Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa in recognition
of the anniversary of his death on November 6th, 1981. It is also in commemoration
of His Holiness's first visit to North America, during which he traveled
extensively throughout America and Canada. During this visit to the west,
His Holiness proclaimed Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche "Varja Holder and Possessor
of the Ultimate Lineage Victory banner of the Practicing lineage Teachings
and the Karma Kagyu." Thus Trungpa Rinpoche's title became Vajracarya the
Venerable Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He also changed the name of a residential
retreat center in Vermont from "Tail of the Tiger" to its current name:"Karme
Choling".
We have approximated 4,500 photos related to His Holiness' three visits
to North America. What follows is a very brief look at this collection.
Many of the following photos are from areas of this collection for which
we have relatively little information. If you recognize anything about
these photos, including their photographers, we would be happy to add it
to the information we have on them. Our last two photo exhibits revealed
a number of photographer's identities, previously unknown. We are also
very glad to receive your suggestions for future exhibit topics.
You are always welcome to write to
us with comments or questions.
