His Holiness Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa in 1974. His Holiness was the sixteenth in a line of incarnate spiritual teachers who have headed the Kagyu order of Tibetan Buddhism since the twelfth century. The Karmapas are regarded by members of their sect as their sect as living buddhas who manifest their spiritual realization through compassionate activity on behalf of all beings. The sixteenth Karmapa had a close spiritual link with the Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who invited His Holiness to make his first visit to North America in 1974.
